The statement of the problem is a fundamental component of any academic research project. It provides a clear, concise, and focused description of the specific issue the study intends to investigate. In scholarly research, this section establishes the foundation upon which the entire study is built, as it justifies the need for the research, defines the research gap, and links the problem to the study objectives. A well-structured statement of the problem demonstrates the researcher’s understanding of the subject area and situates the research within existing literature (Creswell & Creswell, 2018; Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2019). Conceptual Understanding of the Statement of the Problem The statement of the problem articulates a specific issue, inconsistency, gap in knowledge, or practical challenge that requires systematic investigation. According to Creswell and Creswell (2018), the problem statement should clearly identify a research problem, indicate why it is important, and establish the context in which it exists. Similarly, Kerlinger and Lee (2000) define a research problem as an interrogative statement that asks what relationship exists between two or more variables. Thus, the problem statement is not merely a topic description; rather, it is a precise explanation of a problematic situation that demands scholarly attention. A strong problem statement is rooted in empirical evidence. It must reflect gaps identified in prior studies, inconsistencies in findings, unresolved theoretical debates, or practical challenges observed in real-world settings. For instance, in a study examining organizational productivity, the problem statement should not merely describe productivity but should highlight declining performance trends, inefficiencies, or contradictory research outcomes that necessitate further investigation (Bryman, 2016). Structure of a Standard Statement of the Problem Although institutional guidelines may vary, a standard statement of the problem generally follows a logical progression consisting of four main components: 1. Background Context of the Problem This section briefly introduces the broader issue and provides context. It should present general information supported by literature and statistics to establish relevance. The discussion moves from a broad overview to a more specific issue. Example structure: Introduce the general subject area. Present recent statistics or findings. Show the importance of the issue in a particular sector, region, or population. 2. Identification of the Specific Problem Here, the researcher narrows the discussion to a specific gap, inconsistency, or deficiency. This section must clearly state what is not known, what is not working, or what remains unresolved in existing studies. Common research gaps include: Conceptual gaps (limited theoretical explanations). Empirical gaps (lack of data in a specific location or population). Methodological gaps (inadequate research design in prior studies). Contextual gaps (lack of studies in a particular region or industry). 3. Evidence of the Problem The researcher should provide empirical evidence such as previous study findings, official reports, policy documents, or statistical trends to justify the existence of the problem. This strengthens the credibility of the research and prevents the problem statement from appearing speculative. 4. Consequences and Need for the Study This final section explains the implications of not addressing the problem. It should indicate how the problem affects theory, policy, practi

Glad to come across this question!!! It is important to note that while background to the study discusses the motivation behind the study, statement of the problem is simply stating the existing problems (gaps) unresolved and that are about to be solved by your study. There are conceptual gaps, theoretical gaps, methodological gaps among others. This gives your research premises to prevail over the existing studies. conceptual, when the relationship between the variables is not sufficiently examined; theoretical, when the theoretical basis of the previous studies do not fit well to the phenomenon under study; methodological, when the research methods used in previous studies might have some shortcomings in the presence of other more standard methods that can be used. Your problem statement also or may also includes the inconsistencies observed so far in the findings of previous studies. It is the intersection between what we already knew and what we need to know. It creates the basis for your: Research questions, as they emanate from the problem statement Research focus, which could mean to be objectives Methodology, in order to achieve your objectives of solving the unresolved problems Result interpretations, as this will confirm your stand in your research and either support or disposes the previous findings or imaginations, among others The sources of your problem statement could be from: previous studies and theories; Gaps in knowledge; practical experiences; personal observations; test of theories; current events; technological changes among others. Take for instance, There are numerous government policies on eradicating poverty and unemployment in an economy. despite these policies, poverty rate is on the hike as well as unemployment rate in the said country. Theories might have proofed that in an economy where there are sufficient government policies, poverty and unemployment reduce and thereby improving economic productivity. Previous studies might have also shown that government policies are vital instruments of eradicating poverty and unemployment. but this is not what is really happening in the real world. There is an urgent need to specifically examine the type of government policy that is more important in eradicating poverty and unemployment. Also, you might want to add corruption as one of the major barriers to proper implementation of government policies. Your gaps may also emanate from the time frame Kindly Note that your statement of the problem must: provide foundation for your research questions offers something new and not repetition connects to existing knowledge and builds on previous studies be specific, focused, feasible, clear, not too broad nor too narrow have justification. Lastly, to have a genuine problem statement, you really need to review enough articles. I mean previous studies so that you are not trying to address an issue that has already been addressed.
