Abstract
Ants and termites are the most abundant animals on the earth. Their ecological success is attributed to their social life, in this study the chemical and physical properties of termite are known to have an influence on the soil and have increased clay properties by 20% thereby making the termite hill clay very special case to study. The efficiency of every drilling operation is enhanced by the application of drilling mud with suitable additives. This work is a performance evaluation study of local viscosifier (Termite hill clay) in controlling the viscosity of a water base mud. In Nigeria, most of the companies that deals with the design of drilling fluid import their additives, this project is aimed at improving local content participation in the oil and gas industry thereby making the formulation of drilling fluids cheaper. Nine formulations of mud samples were made of the same Concentrations (24.5g/350ml of mud) for both the locally sourced clay and the imported Bentonite. The mud density, PH, Marsh funnel Viscosity and the rheological properties were determined. In this experiment, a blank waster based-mud was prepared and split into  two different portions 0.1g, 0.2g, 0.3g, 0.4g, 0.5g, 0.6g, 0.7g, 0.8g,& 0.9g concentration of local termite hill clay and C.M.C were added as viscosifiers and the properties were determined respectively....
