Having taking cognizance of the roles commercial banks in Nigeria play in its economic and industrial development especially at this critical economic time. The objectives of this research were to ascertain changes in deposits, which leads to changes in the invention and lending of commercial banks. The methodology used was primary and secondary data to reflect the various levels of changes in these key areas. Furthermore, the impacts of the central bank’s credit guidelines and economic directives as well as the individual bank’s polices have on their operation were realized. Also, it was observed that our commercial banking system still operates in accordance with the orthodox banking policies which do not reflect the economic aspiration of the nation. For examples, special emphasis was made on the issue of collateral.
