The objective of the study is to carry out an examination of the intergovernmental relations and the performance of local government in Makurdi local government area of Benue state. System theory as attributed to David Easton (1950) was adopted as the theoretical framework for the study. As a descriptive survey design, a structured questionnaire was distributed to respondents for data collection and analysis. A population of 75 participants was sampled using random sampling technique as a sample size for the study. The study made use of both primary and secondary methods of data collection. Whereas simple percentage was used to analyze the data collected. Findings from the study revealed that there is a strong relationship between intergovernmental relation and the performance of local government in Nigeria and that intergovernmental relation in Makurdi Local Government Area Council has ensured efficiency in performance.
