Distribution of HIV-related opportunistic infections amongst HIV-patients in Rivers state university teaching hospital, PortHarcourt

Abstract
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection, making a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. This research examined the prevalence of HIV-related opportunistic infections amongst patients at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt. The study aimed to determine the number of such infections, identify the most common types, and analyze the demographic distribution of affected patients. A retrospective study design was employed, with a sample size of 200 out of the total population of 400 HIV-positive patients. Data was collected through structured forms, gathering demographic information (age, gender, marital status), medical details (HIV diagnosis date, clinical stage, and antiretroviral therapy usage), and opportunistic infection present. Two research questions were used in this study. The Data obtained from the medical records was reviewed and analyzed using Chi-square (X²) at a 95% confidence interval, and findings revealed the following distribution of infections: tuberculosis (44%), pneumonia (23%), candidiasis (15%), Pneumocystis jirovecii Pneumonia (13.5%), herpes simplex virus (9.5%), toxoplasmosis (5.5%), cytomegalovirus (4.5%), cryptococcosis (4%), invasive cervical cancer (3.5%), Cryptococcal meningitis (3%), and histoplasmosis (3%). The study recommends the need for further research into the stigmatization of HIV-positive individuals and its impact on their healthcare-seeking behavior....
