Abstract
Hand hygiene is crucial for preventing the spread of infectious diseases, yet handwashing practices are often inadequate among healthcare workers. This study aimed to determine the knowledge and practice of handwashing among student nurses at the School of Nursing, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, Nigeria. The study employed a non-experimental descriptive survey design. The target population consisted of 217 student nurses across all levels (100, 200, and 300), with the entire population surveyed using a self-structured online questionnaire. Out of the 217 questionnaires distributed, 135 valid responses were received. The results showed that while all respondents (100%) had heard about handwashing, only 77.8% correctly understood its definition as washing hands with soap/sanitizer under running water for 15-20 seconds. Regarding practice, 100% agreed that handwashing should be done before/after patient contact and procedures, but only 29.6% spent the recommended 15-20 seconds washing hands. Major factors hindering proper handwashing included busy schedules (48.9%), lack of resources like running water (59.3%), and lack of knowledge (25.2%). The study concluded that although student nurses had good knowledge about handwashing, their practice was suboptimal due to time constraints, resource limitations, and some knowledge gaps. Key recommendations included providing proper handwashing facilities, employing more nurses to reduce workloads, and continued education on handwashing importance and technique....
