Abstract
Education is a basic tool used by society for the transmission of its societal values. It has become an area of prime importance not only for government or voluntary agencies but also for individuals, families, Governments and communities. This study aimed to examine the influence of family background on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Kumbotso local government area of Kano State. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to the respondents and data collected was analyzed using simple percentage. The findings of the study revealed that most of the respondents (74%) were male. However, (56%) of the respondents indicated that parent socioeconomic status influences the academic performance of students in the study area. The findings also revealed that the majority of the respondents (56%) indicated that there is an effect of family size on the academic performance of students in Kumbotso local government area of Kano state. It was recommended that Parents should shun the temptation of giving all their time to their jobs and other activities to the detriment of their children. To policymakers, findings of researches on educational development are able to achieve desired goals. The study population of the local government comprises of 13 secondary schools with a total number of 4,540 SSI secondary school students. Hence, the study population involved senior secondary school (SS) students from five selected schools in the area. A total of 80 students were drawn from the list of the five schools, with 16 students from each school. The selected schools were chosen on the basis of their location (urban or rural), mixed or single-sex and whether they are boarding or day schools.
