The aim of the study is to investigate the causes and effects of cost overruns in construction projects using selected construction projects in Rivers State. The research will be an exploratory one whereby, it will be investigating the causes and effects of cost overruns in construction projects using selected construction projects. The study will use primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data was collected by means of questionnaires administered to the selected sample, and through interviews with some stakeholders including managers of the construction industry, for example, Architects, Builders, Quantity Surveyors and Engineers. A total of two hundred and fifty eighty (258) personnel were selected at random from the total staff of the companies. The study purposively sampled the selected stakeholders in Airtrace Solutions Limited, Rivers State due to proximity and the ability of the researcher to readily collect data for the study used 258 respondents with the help of yaro yanme sample size formula. From the SPSS output for one sample t-test table above, p-value for t-test .0000.05 level of significance which we signified that the null hypothesis was rejected and concluded that the causes of cost overrun had a significant effect on construction projects in Nigeria. In light of the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made that the adoption of sophisticated project management scheduling tools can enhance planning accuracy, monitor project progress, and identify potential delays and cost overruns early and employ more precise cost estimation techniques and regularly update these estimates to reflect current market conditions and inflation rates.
