Abstract
This study titled“Religion and Poverty: Issues and Challenges in Elnathan John’s Born on a Tuesday” captures the realistic depiction of northern Nigerian society in the face of abject poverty. The study explores how religion and poverty have been deployed in Elnathan John’s Born on a Tuesday in the advancement of his discourse on the realistic depiction of northern Nigeria through a literary lens. The study is premised on the knowledge that poverty is catalyst for religious extremism or fanaticism. Through the analysis of the text, we see how religion has bedeviled African society and Nigeria in particular. To curb the menace of poverty, the government should create an enabling environment that will bring jobs and cure people from religious fanaticism.
