Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive critical discourse analysis (CDA) of selected conversations within Olu Obafemi''s"Running Dreams: Tales from Many Nations." Language serves not only as a communication tool but as a medium for constructing identities and embedding ideologies. The study aims to explore the discursive strategies and power dynamics within the dialogues of this contemporary African literary work, revealing how power is constructed, contested, and negotiated. The literature review underscores the significance of CDA in analyzing literary texts, particularly within African literature, and incorporates postcolonial and feminist theories to provide a multidimensional understanding of the text. This theoretical framework facilitates a deeper examination of language, identity, and power within the selected conversations. A qualitative research design is employed, utilizing purposive sampling to select eight conversations rich in thematic content and representative of diverse character interactions. The methodology involves a detailed CDA to uncover discursive strategies and power dynamics. Findings indicate that characters use a range of discursive strategies, such as intertextuality, metaphorical framing, and narrative embedding, to convey meaning and reinforce or challenge power structures. Power dynamics are evident in lexical choices, turn-taking, topic control, and the use of silence and omissions. The study reveals that power in"Running Dreams" is multifaceted and context-dependent, with traditional hierarchies sometimes inverted in dream sequences. The conclusion emphasizes the intricate interplay of language, power, and ideology in Obafemi''''s work, highlighting the broader societal debates and tensions reflected in the conversations. Recommendations suggest further research into CDA of contemporary African literature to deepen understanding of the cultural and ideological underpinnings of these texts. ...
