Abstract
This study investigates the environmental reporting practices of African Independent Television (AIT) and Channels Television in Nigeria, emphasizing their roles in shaping public discourse on environmental issues. Grounded in agenda-setting and framing theories, the research explores how these media outlets influence public perceptions and awareness. The methodology employed a comparative research design, targeting environmental journalists from both stations. A census sampling technique was used, encompassing 60 journalists—25 from AIT and 35 from Channels Television. Data was gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal that both AIT and Channels Television engage significantly in environmental reporting, with AIT covering a greater frequency of environmental topics (62% coverage rate) compared to Channels Television (58%). However, Channels Television excels in content quality, achieving a higher audience engagement score (75% favorable perception). The study highlights a significant correlation between the quality of environmental reporting and public awareness, indicating that increased media coverage contributes positively to environmental consciousness. In conclusion, while both stations are vital in environmental advocacy, there is a need for improved investigative journalism and greater collaboration with environmental experts. Recommendations include enhancing investigative training for journalists and fostering community engagement to further amplify public awareness of environmental issues. This study serves as a foundation for understanding the media''s critical role in promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria....
