Abstract
This study investigates the impact of poverty within the Minna metropolis from 2000 to 2019. Utilizing a historical research approach, the study combines primary data from oral interviews with secondary data from government reports, academic literature, and existing studies. The principal aim is to understand the multifaceted dimensions of poverty in Minna and its implications on residents'' lives. Key background information highlights the socioeconomic, political, and environmental factors contributing to persistent poverty. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policy formulation at both local and national levels, guiding resource allocation and the implementation of effective interventions. The literature review draws on seminal works such as Amartya Sen''s"Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation," and reports like UN-Habitat’s"The Challenge of Slums: Global Report on Human Settlements," which provide frameworks for understanding urban poverty and formulating targeted strategies. Findings indicate that while there have been periods of marginal improvement in poverty indicators, structural barriers, economic shocks, and political instability have hindered sustained progress. Limited employment opportunities, inadequate access to quality education, and the prevalence of the informal sector are major drivers of poverty in Minna. Environmental challenges, such as erratic rainfall, further exacerbate food insecurity and economic hardship. Addressing poverty in Minna requires comprehensive, inclusive policies that focus on education, skills development, and infrastructure investment. Strengthening social safety nets and fostering partnerships between government and civil society organizations can enhance the effectiveness of poverty reduction efforts, promoting sustainable development and improved livelihoods for Minna''s residents....
