SMEs play a pivotal role in job creation, technological innovation, and poverty alleviation, particularly in developing economies where they contribute significantly to economic diversification. This research aims to analyze the contributions of SMEs to job creation, assess their role in technological innovation, and evaluate the challenges they face. Filling the knowledge gap concerning SME impact in Niger State, the study offers insights for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and financial institutions. The literature review highlights the critical role of SMEs in economic development, supported by theories such as the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Theory and the Resource-Based View (RBV). These frameworks emphasize the significance of supportive environments and unique firm resources for SME success. The research design employs a quantitative approach with a survey methodology, utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed to 386 SME owners/managers in Niger State, determined using Taro-Yamane’s formula. Data collection and analysis through SPSS version 22.0 reveal key findings. The study finds that SMEs significantly contribute to job creation, with a mean score of 3.80 indicating their essential role in reducing unemployment. SMEs also drive technological innovation, with a mean score of 3.65 reflecting their leadership in adopting new technologies. Challenges such as access to financing (mean score 3.85), regulatory hurdles (mean score 3.70), and inadequate infrastructure (mean score 3.75) are prominent. The study concludes that while SMEs are crucial for economic growth, addressing these challenges is vital for their sustained impact.
