Abstract
Childhood obesity poses significant health challenges, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. This comparative cross-sectional study investigates the prevalence and influencing factors of obesity among primary school children in urban and rural areas of Anambra State, Nigeria. A total of 606 children aged 4-16 years were sampled using a multistage sampling method. Anthropometric data, socio-demographic characteristics, and lifestyle factors were analyzed. Results revealed a higher prevalence of obesity in urban areas (4.6%) compared to rural areas (2.6%), with urban children also exhibiting higher overweight rates (5.6% vs. 3.6%). Rural children had a greater proportion of underweight cases (13.2% vs. 7.3%). Significant associations were found between obesity and socio-demographic variables such as parents’ education (p0.029) and occupation (mothers: p0.003, fathers: p0.000). Lifestyle factors, including dietary patterns and physical activity, also contributed to the observed disparities. The study underscores the urgent need for tailored interventions addressing urban dietary habits and promoting physical activities in schools. These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence necessary for designing effective public health strategies in Nigeria. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests, affirmed the reliability of the results (p0.05). This research highlights the intersection of environment, lifestyle, and socio-economic factors in shaping childhood obesity trends, emphasizing the importance of context-specific policy formulation....
