Abstract
This project examines the role of character and characterization in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Purple Hibiscus, focusing on the psychological and social complexities of the central figures. The novel, set in post-colonial Nigeria, explores the life of Kambili Achike, a young girl living under the oppressive and authoritarian rule of her father, Eugene Achike. Through an analysis of the characters, the project aims to explore how Adichie uses different methods of characterization to reveal the impact of family dynamics, religious devotion, and political tensions in Nigerian society on individual growth and identity. The study also highlights the role of secondary characters such as Kambili's mother, Beatrice, her brother, Jaja, and their evolving relationship with Eugene, as well as the contrasting influences of Aunty Ifeoma and her children, who offer alternative models of strength, freedom, and defiance. By analyzing Adichie’s use of direct and indirect characterization, the study explores how characters’ internal and external transformations reflect broader themes of power, repression, resilience, and liberation. The research underscores the narrative's critique of the complexities of domestic abuse, religious fanaticism, and societal expectations, illustrating how character development serves as a powerful tool for thematic exploration in Purple Hibiscus....
