The main aim was to assess the computerization of health records as a solution for an effective health management information system (HMIS) in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Nigeria. A pre-tested semi-structured self-administered questionnaire was distributed to selected health care professionals (Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Records, Laboratory Scientists and Radiologists), and the rate of response was 90% (300 healthcare professionals). Computer knowledge was found to be good among 54.3% of respondents. Knowledge was influenced by sex (p-value0.0001), PC rate (p-value0.0001), and formal computer training (p-value0.0001), but not level of the healthcare professionals. PC rate was 22% with less than one quarter connection to the internet. Positive attitudes towards the use of computers were found in 37.3%, it was influenced by sex, PC rate and formal computer training (p-value 0.05), but not by their levels. However, only 29.4% had good computing skills. Skills were influenced by pc rate and formal computer training (p-value 0.005) but not by the sex and levels of the respondents. The highest levels of competence in skills were for e-mail, word processing, file management and data entry in that order. More than 50% had no skills in spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and medicine search. This study has therefore discovered good computer knowledge, a negative attitude and low computer skills among a majority of the healthcare professionals. Intervention strategies are therefore highly recommended.
