Abstract
Water is an essential natural resource that supports life and sustains human health and well-being. It is crucial for domestic, industrial, agricultural, and recreational purposes. In urban areas, pipe-borne water provided by the government or private utilities is considered the most reliable and safe for human consumption. However, in many parts of Nigeria, including Enugu metropolis, access to pipe-borne water is limited, pushing residents to depend on alternative sources such as boreholes, wells, streams, rainwater, and sachet water. Findings revealed that most respondents rely on multiple water sources. Pipe-borne water, when available, is the safest. Borehole, well, and stream water are often contaminated and require treatment. Residents report health issues associated with water use, including typhoid and diarrhea. The research therefore recommends that the Enugu State Water Corporation should invest in the rehabilitation and expansion of pipe-borne water infrastructure to ensure a consistent and equitable supply to all residents. The government should prioritize the maintenance of existing pipelines to prevent leaks and contamination. Moreover, borehole and well water should be regularly tested and treated to reduce the risk of contamination. Local authorities should develop a regulatory framework for borehole construction and operation, ensuring proper casing and sanitary measures. Communities should be educated about boiling or treating water from boreholes and wells before consumption...
