Abstract
This study investigated the effects of the poor condition of service on staff performance. Poor leadership, political instability, and bureaucratic process in the civil service are some of the problems causing the poor condition of service. The main objective of this research work is to examine the effects of the poor condition of service on staff performance in Bassa Local Government. This research work was carried out using simple random techniques. Questionnaires were administered to some percentage of staff drawn at random. The population size comprised of 100 staff in Bassa local government. A total number of one hundred (100) questionnaires were distributed in the course of collecting data for this research work. However, a total number of eighty-five (85) questionnaires were returned. The returned questionnaires represent 85% of the questionnaire administered to the staff of the local government. From the data collected and analyzed, it was revealed that leadership problem is one of the issues that affect the condition of service in Bassa Local Government. It was also revealed that poor motivation of the staff in the aspect of salary, promotion, training programme, leave allowance, and job security reduces their performance in their workplace. From the findings in this study, the following recommendations were made: Government should endeavor to take the local government to an enviable height and identify the problems of the poor condition of service and also provide solutions to them in other to boost the performance of staff in Bassa Local Government. ...
