Abstract
Quality data plays an important role and is a cornerstone of performance improvement and management. It is very obvious that no organization can operate to its full potential without data. The hospital is part of the health care industry which provides health care service to patients through accident and emergency, day-case procedures, inpatients stay and outpatients visit on a daily basis. Patients’ information collected at every point of care is recorded for different purposes the information is then processed into structured data through clinical coding and classification. The main purpose of coding is to provide information for research, epidemiology and also for the teaching of medical and paramedical students. This presents a study to seeks and evaluate the“knowledge and perception of Health Information Management professionals on e-coding for quality clinical data in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin Kwara State. Questionnaire was used as the research instrument to elicit information from the respondents. Eighty-seven (87) respondents participated in the study which comprises of twenty-eight (28) male and fifty-nine (59) female Health Information Managers. Data collected were analyzed using a frequency distribution table. Results of the study show that the e-coding system of clinical data has not been effectively adopted by the hospital as a viable coding system for quality clinical data. Also, findings from the research revealed that there are certain factors responsible for not adopting electronic coding in UITH one of the factors is the inadequate power supply in the hospital. A completes introduction and widespread adoption of the electronic coding system for quality clinical data by the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, will provide more standard and structured patients information that required for clinical coding, also training of  Health Information Managers should not be about step to coding but also learn medical terminologies....
