Abstract
A field experiment was carried out at the experimental teaching and research farm of Joseph Sarwuan Takar University Makurdi, Nigeria from July to November 2019. The objective of the study was to identify the effect of different population densities on the productivity of soil beans in Makurdi Benue State. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. One variety (TGX1987-10F) was evaluated under different population density of 666,666ha-1, 499,999 ha-1, 400,0000 ha-1, 333,333 ha-1, and 266,666 ha-1. Data for days to 50% flowering, days to 95% maturity, pod clearance, height at harvest, number of pods per plant, number of branches, hundred seed weight and seed yield were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that for all the soybean parameters evaluated only seed yield showed a significant difference (P0.05). Among the five population densities tested (666,666ha-1, 499,999 ha-1, 400,0000 ha-1, 333,333 ha-1, and 266,666 ha-1), 499,999 ha-1, gave the highest yield of 16.17tons/ha followed by 666,666ha-1 which yield 12.97tons/ha while 400,0000 ha-1 gave the least yield of 7.52tons/ha. It is therefore recommended that TGX1987-10F at a population density of 499,999 ha-1 to 666,666 ha-1 at row spacing of 30X5cm to 40X5cm should be used by farmers in order to obtain optimum yield....
