Abstract
This research was carried out to determine the effect of soil and water properties on the occurrence and diversity of aquatic macrophytes in ponds in Makurdi. The experiment involved field and laboratory studies. Soil and water samples were collected at a seasonal pond located at the Joseph Sarwuan Takar University Makurdi and analyzed for soil properties and physicochemical parameters of the water. Soil properties observed were soil pH, texture, soil organic matter, Nitrogen content, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, total exchangeable, exchangeable acid and cation exchange capacity. Water quality parameters measured were water pH, electrical conductivity, TDS, DO, BOD, odour, colour, total hardness, NO3-, SO42-, PO4-, CO32- and HCO3. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation analysis. The result showed that all soil and water quality parameters assessed supports the growth of the aquatic macrophyte in the ponds. Aquatic weeds identified in the pond were Oryza longistaminata, echinochloa cris-galli, cyprus rotundus, sorghum helepens, nymphaea lotus. The results also showed that with increasing anthropogenic activities around the pond this is alteration of water quality parameters. It was recommended that anthropogenic activities around the pond body should be controlled in order to discourage the indiscriminate dumping of agrochemicals and other contaminant in the pond.  Continuous monitoring of water quality should be carried out to avoid environmental pollution and toxicity of the water body. ...
