Abstract
The project entitled“Post Harvest and Storage Losses in Tomato in Kaita local government area of Katsina. The main objectives of this research is to determine the post harvest and storage losses of tomato in Kaita Local Government to examine the extent of post-harvest losses among our peasant farmers to find out the major causes of post harvest losses in the study area. Despite all the nutritional benefits of the crops, many challenges are making its production not profitable to most developing countries either in production, post-harvest, marketing or a combination of any of them. Purposive sampling techniques were used for this study in which two areas were selected randomly for the study, which is Allemi and Yanhoho of Kaita local government area, 50 respondents will be used for this research. Twenty-five respondents will be selected from the selected areas. The major findings show that 40% of the respondents said that poor handling is the primary factor that militates loss, 20% said disease damage, while 20% said no. It is recommended that the farmers should be careful in handling their farm produce with care to prevent the post-harvest losses. Famers should use effective pesticides to curtail the effect of pests and diseases. Government should provide a market avenue in the area to reduce post harvest losses. ...
