Abstract
Biodiesel production has gained significant attention as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. This study focuses on the production of biodiesel using soybean oil as the feedstock and characterizing the resulting biodiesel. The transesterification process was employed to convert soybean oil into biodiesel, using methanol as the alcohol and sodium hydroxide as the catalyst. The reaction conditions were optimized to achieve maximum biodiesel yield. The characterization of biodiesel involved analyzing its physical and chemical properties. The physical properties include density, viscosity, flash point, and pour point, which was determined using standard ASTM methods. The chemical properties included acid value, saponification value, iodine value, and ester content. These properties provide crucial information about the quality and performance of biodiesel. The results showed that soybean oil can be successfully converted into biodiesel with high yield using the transesterification process. The optimized reaction conditions resulted in biodiesel with favorable physical and chemical properties. The biodiesel exhibited lower density and viscosity compared to soybean oil, making it suitable for use as a fuel. The flash point and pour point values were within acceptable ranges, indicating their safety for storage and use. The chemical characterization revealed that the produced biodiesel had a low acid value, indicating good stability and resistance to oxidation. The saponification value indicated the presence of ester compounds, confirming successful transesterification. The iodine value indicated the degree of unsaturation, with lower values suggesting better oxidative stability. The ester content analysis confirmed the conversion of soybean oil into biodiesel. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the successful production of biodiesel from soybean oil through transesterification. The characterized biodiesel exhibited favorable properties, suggesting its potential as a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel source. Further research can focus on optimizing the process parameters and evaluating the biodiesel''''s performance in engines and its impact on emissions....
