Assessment of psychosocial educational intervention on patients living with cervical cancer in Gusau, Zamfara state

Abstract
Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of psychological trauma among women worldwide, and the third most common malignancy in women. The objectives of the study are: To assess the services of the psycho-educational programme To identify the quality of personnel responsible for the programme To find out the perception of the patients about psycho-educational intervention To identify the relationship between the years of hospital visits and patients reception of psycho-educational intervention. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed using structured questionnaire. Whole population{67) was used for the study using purposive sampling technique. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 21.0, IBM Corp, New York) was used for data analysis. Chi-square was used to establish significant relationships. Findings showed that most of the patients did not understand what the psycho-educational programme is and most of the patients did not have a good perception towards the programme in the centre. Significant relationship was established between duration of hospital visits and reception of psycho-educational intervention(CV5.991, X215.922).  Similarly, the relationship was established between the reception of psycho-educational intervention and women’s perception of the programme (CV9.49, X219.80). It was recommended that the management of Federal Medical Centre Gusau should sponsor their staff to go special training on psychoeducational intervention to enhance positive perception of patients living with cervical cancer, manpower improvement and adequate supervision and guidance of the staff responsible for the activities to enhance the positive feeling of patients living with cervical cancer....
