Abstract
This study undertakes a contrastive analysis of plural forms in Nupe language and English, aiming to unravel the intricacies of their pluralization processes. The research problem centers on the diverse strategies employed by these languages in forming plurals, with a focus on affixation, stem modifications, and irregular plurals. The objectives include examining similarities and differences between Nupe and English pluralization, providing insights into their morpho-syntactic structures, and understanding the impact of plurals on sentence coherence and grammatical accuracy. The research methodology involves face-to-face interviews with twenty Nupe language informants, emphasizing the researcher's active role as a native speaker. Data analysis employs linguistic scrutiny, incorporating qualitative and quantitative methods to explore affixation, stem modifications, and phonological changes in plurals. Results reveal commonalities in affixation strategies and irregular plurals, yet distinctive approaches to stem modifications and phonological alterations. This comprehensive analysis contributes valuable insights into the syntactic implications of plural forms, emphasizing their role in agreement within sentences. The study unveils the fluidity of plural formation in Nupe and English, dispelling a singular formula for plurals and highlighting the linguistic nuances within each language. Recommendations include further linguistic documentation of Nupe, leveraging research findings for language pedagogy, and exploring dialectal variations in pluralization. This research enriches the understanding of pluralization patterns, offering a foundation for cross-linguistic investigations and computational analyses in linguistics. ...
