Abstract
Cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye, which initially prevents clear vision and eventually progresses to blindness if left untreated (WHO, 2019). This research study was a descriptive survey carried out to assess the level of knowledge of patients towards cataract surgery in the eye complex of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Kwara State. The objectives of the study were to assess the attitude of patients towards cataract surgery in eye complex, to find out the factors influencing the acceptance of cataract surgery among patients in eye complex and possible ways of improving public knowledge among patients towards cataract surgery in eye complex. Cataract is the leading cause of treatable blindness, and lack of knowledge about the disease and it surgery is a major barrier in reducing blindness owing to cataracts in developing countries.50 respondents were used for the research. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The information from the research was manually analyzed and presented using frequency tables and bar charts. Hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis revealed that 60%of patients strongly agreed that cataract surgery is a common surgical procedure that involves removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replace with an artificial one. The implication of the study to nursing profession was that the findings of the study have provided important information that would assist nurses in establishing methods that would help cataract patients to accept surgical treatment irrespective of their beliefs and other conditions in the hospital. And it was recommended that the government should improve awareness campaigns among people about cataracts and it surgery and related blindness through mass media, community sensitization and mobilization and initiate and implement free cataract programs at the hospital level as well as outreach services....
