Abstract
This study investigates"The role of auditors in fraud prevention and control in the public sector," focusing on the Kogi State Water Board, Lokoja. The research problem centers on understanding the effectiveness of auditors in mitigating fraud risks and challenges within a public utility context. The primary aims include assessing the role of auditors, examining internal control systems, and identifying fraud risks. The research objectives guide a case study approach involving 92 staff members through a structured questionnaire. The methodology incorporates quantitative analysis using statistical tools and qualitative content analysis for a nuanced exploration. Findings reveal a positive perception of auditors'' roles and highlight their proactive involvement in fraud prevention. The study emphasizes the importance of internal control systems and recommends tailored measures to strengthen fraud prevention mechanisms. The conclusion summarizes key insights, emphasizing the need for ongoing evaluation and enhancement of internal controls. Recommendations focus on comprehensive fraud prevention programs, reinforcing auditor independence, and continuously evaluating internal controls based on the COSO Integrated Framework.
