This study aimed to assess the reported cases of sexual abuse among adolescents during the pandemic period at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling of case files of 20 sexually abused adolescents aged 10-19 years at NAUTH during the April-June 2020 lockdown. Data on socio-demographics, and details of abuse including location, perpetrator and health/psychological outcomes were extracted and analyzed using SPSS. Findings: Majority (75%) of victims were females aged 11-13 years. Neighbors (30%) and teachers (15%) were the most common perpetrators, with abuse occurring mostly (55%) in perpetrators’ houses in the afternoons. Vaginal (30%) and anal (25%) penetration were the predominant manners of abuse. Most cases (80%) were reported to authorities but no legal action was taken in 65% of cases. Key barriers to reporting abuse were confidentiality concerns and protecting family image. Victims commonly experienced psychological outcomes like depression (15%) and moodiness (15%). Conclusions: Child sexual abuse was prevalent during the COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria, with known neighborhood males being common perpetrators. However, legal action against perpetrators was lacking. There is a need for multifaceted awareness campaigns on risks and reporting procedures for sexual abuse, to improve disclosure rates and access to support services for victims in Nigeria. Authorities should strengthen response systems and law enforcement, especially during humanitarian crises like pandemics when children are most vulnerable. ...Preview Download Preview +Other Community Medicine project topics and materials you might be interested in»Knowledge and perceptions of infertility by male artisans in Nnewi north local government area, Anambra state»Assessment of reported cases of sexual abuse among adolescent during covid-19 pandemic in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi in Anambra state»Assessment of household solid waste management in selected local government areas in Plateau state - a comparison between urban and rural»Awareness of HPV, HPV vaccine and rate of vaccination among female students of school of nursing sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi»Assessment of knowledge, attitude, and practice of coping mechanisms for dysmenorrhea among female nursing students in NAUTH, Nnewi»Prevalence and associated selected factors of respiratory tract infections among under-5 children treated at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Neni - a 5 year review»Prevalence and determinants of pica amongst pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Anambra state»Socio-demographics, pattern of presentation and treatment outcome of breast cancer among female patients in tertiary health institutions in Anambra state: a five-year review»Prevalence of foreign body aspiration among pediatric patients at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi»Assessing and comparing obesity among primary school children in urban and rural areas of Anambra State»Perception and factors affecting the acceptance of online lectures among medical students in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi»Prostate cancer awareness and screening amongst men aged 40 years and above in Nkwo Nnewi market, Nnewi»Factors associated with the practice of HIV screening among nursing students in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi»Knowledge, attitude and practice of preventive measures against communicable diseases in daycare centers in Nnewi-North LGA Anambra state»Knowledge, acceptance and perception of caesarean section among women of childbearing age at a primary health centre in Neni, Anambra state
