Abstract
This study examined conflict management among health workers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. Three specific objectives guided the research: 1) To determine how past events without an actual cause could lead to misunderstandings and conflicts among NAUTH staff, 2) To explore how ineffective communication stemming from differing perceptions of spoken words could precipitate conflicts, and 3) To examine how factors like education levels, language barriers, and poor working conditions contribute to conflicts. Relevant literature was reviewed, and a descriptive research design was employed. The study population was 1,081, with a sample size of 292 selected through simple random sampling. Data was collected via structured questionnaires. The findings revealed a significant relationship between conflict among NAUTH health workers and individual education levels, communication issues, and unconducive working environments. The study concluded that while internal conflicts undoubtedly exist at NAUTH, efforts are underway to resolve them amicably through acknowledged conflict management strategies. Conflicts arise from disagreements and competing interests. Most respondents affirmed experiencing staff conflicts, which can harm an organization. Recommendations include: 1) Good governance delivering equitable services under the rule of law to reduce conflict catalysts, and 2) Promoting negotiation as a direct dialogue process between conflicting parties to resolve disputes. Effective negotiation strategies should be adopted by management for dispute resolution. Overall, this study highlights the complex interplay of factors contributing to workplace conflicts among Nigerian health workers and underscores negotiation and good governance as key conflict management approaches....
