Abstract
This research work focuses on an assessment of the role of local government institutions in rural development a case study of ----- local government, brief historical background of the local government. This project study assessment of the role of local government institutions on rural development with particular reference to ------- local government from 2010– 2015. Local government plays a crucial role in shaping the socio-economic development of rural areas. However, there is a need to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the roles and effectiveness of local government as an institution of rural development due to the following problems and challenges: Despite the allocation of significant resources to local governments for rural development, there is a perceived gap in achieving tangible and sustainable development outcomes in rural areas. This gap raises questions about the efficiency and effectiveness of local governments in fulfilling their intended roles. Activities were given, various literatures were reviewed under logical sub-headings with a summary of reviews, survey research methodology was used and questionnaires was chosen as the method of data collection for the study, table and percentage were used as data analysis techniques, the data collection was presented, analyzed and interpreted, at the end of careful study, the researcher is able to realize that, ------ local government is performing well in rural development but fails to perform more than good due to the number of problems encounters in fulfillment of social economic and political objectives.
