Abstract
Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum) is an important and widely cultivated crop globally contributing to food security and economic stability however, post-harvest losses due to Fungal diseases pose a significant threat to Irish potato production and consumption. This project aims to isolate fungal pathogens causing post-harvest rot of Irish potatoes and to carry out control trials using ethanol extracts of pawpaw and bitter leaf in Biu lga, Borno state. The experiment was completely randomized, all treatments were in triplicates. The data obtained were analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) as the statistical method at 5% probability level and means that are significant were separated using Fisher's least significant difference (LSD). Five fungal isolates were identified which include Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizopus stolonifa, Rhizopus microspores, Arthrographis kalrae. Carica papaya inhibited the radial expansion of the fungi 46.4 mm in vitro and lesion size of 49.4 mm in vivo. Vernonia amygdalina showed radial inhibition of the fungal isolates at 47.0 mm in vitro and lesion size reduction of 47.42 mm in vivo. Based on the result of the research, I recommend that further research be carried out on the effect of fungal infection on the nutritional value of Irish potatoes....
