A sociological exploration of single parenthood - causes and consequences in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of single-parenthood on families in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The research focused on the factors that lead to single-parenthood, the impacts on both the single parent and the children in the household and the measures that can be adopted to tackle the issues. The study the economic strain theory to explain the causes and consequences of single-parenting in Yenagoa. The study used a cross-sectional survey design and a mixed-methods approach was used, including surveys and interviews with single parents and their children in Yenagoa.  The population of the study includes 353,344 males and females in Yenagoa and the sample size of 187 was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. The findings suggest that single-parenthood can lead to increased stress and financial strain on the caregiver, as well as emotional and behavioural issues for the children. The lack of support networks and resources in the community further exacerbates these challenges. Recommendations for policy-makers and social service providers are discussed to better support single-parent families in this region....
