Abstract
This research delves into the pivotal role of leadership participation in promoting cooperative societies in Nigeria. Cooperatives, as community-based organizations, have long been acknowledged as instruments of socioeconomic development. This study explores the intricate relationship between effective leadership participation, various leadership styles, challenges faced by cooperative leaders, and strategies for enhancing leadership within cooperative societies. Through a comprehensive analysis of survey data from 144 members of the cooperative society, this research offers valuable insights that can guide policy, decision-making, and practices within the Nigerian cooperative sector. The findings of this research underscore the significance of leadership participation, demonstrating that it positively correlates with the performance and growth of cooperative societies. Moreover, the study reveals the influence of diverse leadership styles on cooperative success and sustainability. Challenges confronted by cooperative leaders, particularly in governance and resource management, are highlighted, emphasizing the importance of addressing these obstacles for long-term cooperative effectiveness. The research also identifies a positive relationship between the implementation of strategies to enhance leadership participation and the success and sustainability of cooperative societies. These strategies encompass leadership development programmes, capacity-building initiatives, and member engagement efforts, all of which are instrumental in promoting cooperative success. In conclusion, this research provides critical insights into the cooperative movement in Nigeria, offering recommendations for the development of effective leadership, governance structures, and strategies for addressing challenges. The study calls for cooperation between cooperative societies, government agencies, and other stakeholders to strengthen the cooperative sector, ultimately contributing to economic and social development in Nigeria....
