Abstract
The design and fabrication of a rock-cutting apparatus for lapidary purposes were carried out with the aim of procuring mineral/rock samples. Within the realms of mining, geology, and metallurgy laboratories, there exists a necessity for devices specialized in cutting specimen strips, rock samples, and cores, which are integral for conducting various tests. This apparatus primarily comprises an electric motor, a diamond cutting blade accompanied by an electric water-cooling pump, a pedal guide for ensuring vertical cutting precision, a safety feature to prevent blade breakage, and a transparent screen guard to avert the dispersion of dust particles during operation. Capable of accommodating blades of up to 350mm in diameter, this machine can facilitate the slicing of rock, core, and mineral samples with a 200mm incision length. It has a dimension of 1220mm x 700mm x 1360mm, and a weight of 125kg. Electric motor was employed to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. Electrical motor is powered by alternating current from a central electrical distribution grid. Drilling fluid was provided to improve the surface finish and flush away chips from the cutting zone. The designed machine used an electric motor of 380V, 50Hz, 5KW at a rotating speed of 2800rpm. The designed and constructed cutting machine can be used to cut various materials so as to get specimens and observe the structures....
