Abstract
This study investigates the impact of fuel price hikes on students in higher education in Nigeria, focusing on how rising fuel costs influence their financial stability, academic performance, and overall quality of life. The research highlights the economic implications of these price increases, particularly concerning transportation costs, accommodation, and food prices. Through a structured questionnaire distributed to a sample of 399 students from various institutions, the study employs quantitative methods to analyze data on students'''' experiences and coping strategies in response to rising living costs. Findings reveal that increased fuel prices significantly affect students’ attendance and participation in academic activities, leading to financial strain and reduced academic engagement. The study identifies several coping mechanisms employed by students, including budgeting, part-time work, and reliance on family support, while also highlighting the inadequacy of these strategies in fully alleviating financial burdens. The research underscores the need for policy considerations and governmental palliative measures to support students facing economic challenges due to fluctuating fuel prices. By illuminating the intricate relationship between fuel price hikes and student welfare, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the socioeconomic factors influencing education in Nigeria, offering insights for stakeholders and policymakers aimed at improving student conditions in higher education. Keywords: Fuel price hikes, students, higher education, Nigeria, financial stability, academic performance, living costs. ...
