An assessment of electronic health record in health care delivery - case study of University of Benin Teaching Hospital Benin City Edo state

Abstract
The study was conducted on the Assessment of Electronic Health Records in Health Care Delivery, and the study focus only on Staff in the Health Information Management Department University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). The study adopted descriptive survey research design, while the study population involved 134 Health Records professionals. 80 sample sizes were drawn from the population for the findings and a self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. 73 questionnaires were retrieved from the 80 questionnaires administered by the researcher to the health information management professionals UBTH, which was used for the findings. The study found that Health Information Management Professionals at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital are knowledgeable about the use of electronic health records and believe that electronic health records improve quick access to patient information. The study found that the majority of respondents in the study were computer literate, experienced in using EHR tools, and comfortable with their use in the Health Information Management department. They do not perceive Electronic Health Records as a burden. However, respondents identified several challenges, including the complexity of EHR systems, insufficient training and support, inadequate infrastructure, security concerns, and limited financial resources. Despite these challenges, respondents recognized the value of EHR in the Health Information Management Department University of Benin Teaching Hospital including quality of care, data management, Privacy and confidentiality, accuracy and complete information, coordination and collaboration within the HIM department and other departments. Based on the findings, it is recommended that national institutions should be mandated by the Federal Government of Nigeria to institutionalize the use of EHR and its applications in the health sector. In addition, the management of UBTH should adopt the standard of EHR, and continuous training and retraining of staff should be ensured in other to improve the efficiency of services....
