Abstract
This study examines the relationship between accounting practices and the performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Northern Taraba State- Nigeria. The study adopts quantitative data using a survey design approach, we collected data from 200 SMEs and conducted in-depth questionnaire responses with 20 owners/managers. The study’s results show a significant positive correlation between effective accounting practices and SME performance. Specifically, the study found that SMEs with strong financial reporting, budgeting, and internal control practices tend to have better financial performance, including higher revenue, profitability, and cash flow. Additionally, our findings suggest that accounting practices have a mediating effect on the relationship between SME characteristics (e.g., size, age, industry type) and performance. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the importance of accounting practices for SME performance and highlights the need for SMEs to prioritize effective accounting practices to achieve sustainable growth and success. ...
