Abstract
This study examines the history of local government administration and urbanization in Bida Local Government from 1976 to the present, focusing on the historical approach known as historicism. Urbanization, with its accompanying population growth and city expansion, presents opportunities for economic growth and improved infrastructure but also challenges such as infrastructure strain, social inequalities, and cultural erosion. Historicism, which integrates historical context and cultural heritage into contemporary planning, provides a valuable framework for addressing these challenges. The principal aim of this research is to explore how historicism can guide sustainable urban development in Bida, leveraging its rich cultural heritage and historical legacy. The study employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining historical analysis with qualitative research methods. Data was collected through interviews with local government officials, community leaders, and residents, as well as through the review of historical documents and urban planning records. Key findings reveal that while rapid urbanization in Bida has led to infrastructure deficits and governance challenges, integrating historicism into urban planning has fostered a sense of community identity and promoted heritage tourism. The study concludes that historicism offers a pathway for sustainable and culturally sensitive urbanization, emphasizing the need for comprehensive infrastructure development, enhanced service delivery, inclusive governance, and sustainable urban planning practices. Recommendations include improving infrastructure, leveraging historical and cultural assets, promoting inclusive governance, and enhancing local government capacity. This research contributes to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the interplay between historicism and urbanization, providing valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and scholars interested in sustainable urban development...
