Abstract
This study investigates the effects of divorce and separation on the academic performance of adult learners in Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria. With rising divorce rates in Nigerian society, this research aims to examine how marital disruptions affect the academic achievements of adult learners. Key objectives include exploring the prevalence of divorce and separation, the challenges faced by learners, the impact on academic performance, and the coping mechanisms employed. The study is grounded in Bandura’s social learning theory and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which explain how environmental factors influence academic outcomes. A quantitative research design was adopted, with a structured questionnaire used for data collection. The target population was 300 adult learners, and a purposive sampling technique was employed to select 100 participants who had experienced divorce or separation within the last five years. Findings reveal that 70% of respondents reported significant emotional and financial challenges affecting their studies, with 65% acknowledging a decline in academic performance. A majority (75%) indicated reduced motivation and focus, while 60% mentioned difficulties balancing personal and academic responsibilities. Coping strategies such as seeking social support and engaging in stress-relief activities were utilized by 80% of respondents. The study concludes that divorce and separation have a detrimental impact on adult learners'' academic performance. It recommends that educational institutions provide tailored support, including counseling, financial aid, and flexible learning options, to mitigate the negative effects. Further research should explore gender differences and long-term impacts of marital disruptions on adult education outcomes....
