Abstract
This study investigates the influence of parental factors on the career choices of senior secondary school students in Bida Local Government Area, Niger State. The motivation behind this research stems from the multifaceted challenges faced by Nigerian school leavers, including technological changes and inadequate career information. The primary aim is to assess the extent of parental influence, identify contributing factors, and examine the relationship between parental guidance and students' career aspirations. This research holds significance as it seeks to provide insights into how parents shape career decisions, thereby impacting students' academic performance and future satisfaction. The literature review encompasses theories such as Social Cognitive Career Theory and Holland''s Theory of Vocational Personalities, providing a framework for understanding the dynamics of parental influence. A descriptive survey design was employed, with a sample of 352 students selected through simple random sampling from a total population of 2,900 across four schools. Data collection utilized structured questionnaires and key informant interviews, analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings indicate that 75% of respondents acknowledged significant parental influence on their career paths, with a mean score of 3.0. Additionally, factors like parental education and family financial status were highlighted as pivotal influences. The study concludes that parental expectations substantially shape students'' career aspirations, impacting their academic performance. Recommendations emphasize the need for increased career awareness programs and parental involvement in guiding students toward informed career choices, and fostering a supportive educational environment....
