Abstract
This study investigates the impact of corruption on human development within the public sector of Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative survey data from 250 residents and local government officials with qualitative insights derived from interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. The study aims to assess the prevalence of corrupt practices, their effects on public service delivery and human development indicators, and the effectiveness of existing anti-corruption measures. Findings reveal a significant perception of corruption prevalence, with bribery, embezzlement, and nepotism frequently reported. Corruption demonstrably hinders the quality and accessibility of essential public services, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Statistical analysis indicates a negative correlation between corruption and key human development indicators, such as poverty levels and literacy rates, highlighting its detrimental impact on overall community well-being. Existing anti-corruption measures were perceived as largely ineffective, with low levels of public trust in relevant agencies. Conversely, higher levels of community participation correlated with lower perceived corruption. Qualitative data corroborated these findings, providing detailed accounts of specific corrupt practices and their adverse consequences. The study concludes that corruption is a systemic issue in Ohafia Local Government Area, significantly impeding human development. It recommends strengthening governance structures, enhancing transparency and accountability, promoting community participation, and reinforcing anti-corruption institutions. Further research is suggested to explore specific mechanisms of corruption and evaluate the effectiveness of targeted interventions. ...
