Abstract
This study was conducted at the small ruminant unit of Adamawa State University Teaching and Research Farm, Mubi, to evaluate the effects of different supplementation levels on the growth and reproductive parameters of West African Dwarf bucks. Twelve bucks, aged 12 months and weighing an average of 12 kg, were randomly assigned to four treatment groups in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates per treatment. The treatments consisted of Mahogany leaves fed ad libitum, supplemented with brewers dried grain at 0g, 50g, 100g, and 150g, respectively. The study measured body length (BL), height at withers (HW), girth circumference (GC), height at rump (HR), abdominal length (AL), abdominal circumference (AC), neck length (NL), and neck circumference (NC). Additionally, reproductive parameters such as scrotal length (SL), scrotal circumference (SC), scrotal and testicular weight (STW), testicular circumference (TC), penile length (PL), and penile weight (PW) were assessed. Results showed that HW ranged from 44.88 to 47.13 cm, comparable to previous studies, while GC averaged 53.58 to 54.58 cm. Other measurements included HR (47.63–51.96 cm), AC (39.38–43.50 cm), NL (12.83–14.75 cm), and NC (23.29–25.63 cm), all significantly (P0.05) different across treatments. Reproductive parameters varied significantly, with SL ranging from 5.0 to 6.0 cm, SC from 14.70 to 16.77 cm, STW from 36.92 to 45.67 g, TC from 8.57 to 10.00 cm, PL from 3.06 to 4.13 cm, and PW from 3.21 to 3.79 g. The results indicate that dietary supplementation positively influenced growth and reproductive traits. The study recommends emphasizing testicular and scrotal measurements for early selection of male goats and ensuring adequate feeding for optimal development....
