Abstract
This research project explored the relationship between extrinsic motivation and academic performance in public secondary schools in Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State. The study employed a descriptive survey design, utilizing questionnaires to gather primary data from teachers in these schools. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 100 students from five secondary schools, with a total target population of 83,650 students. The study aimed to address four research questions related to the impact of teacher-student relationships on academic performance and overall student development. The findings indicated that the teacher-student relationship plays a crucial role in fostering students'' effective learning, self-esteem, and positive social adjustment. Teachers were found to be pivotal in helping students achieve academic excellence by creating a supportive and approachable environment. Furthermore, the study emphasized the importance of parental involvement in maintaining good relationships with both teachers and students to ensure a harmonious school environment. A key result of the study showed that 89 students demonstrated enhanced academic performance due to positive teacher-student relationships. Based on these findings, several recommendations were made, including the need for teachers to create an enabling environment that supports the development of students'' self-esteem and academic adjustment. Additionally, students should view their teachers as caring, approachable figures who are dedicated to their holistic development.
