Knowledge, attitude and perception of health workers towards mentally ill patients - case study of Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Akure

Abstract
This study examined the attitude, perceptions and knowledge of health workers towards mentally ill patients in the Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Akure. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, while the study population comprised 120 Health workers working in the Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Akure. Total enumeration was used instead of a sample size for the study. Questionnaire was used for data collection in the study area as the research instrument. Frequency tables and simple percentages were used for data presentation. The study revealed that the majority of healthcare professionals demonstrated good knowledge and understanding of common types of mental illness. They received specific training and expressed confidence in providing care. While societal stereotypes and colleague attitudes had minimal influence, factors like resource availability, personal experiences, and workload affected their attitudes. Addressing resource gaps and workload management are crucial for quality care. The results highlight the importance of ongoing education and supportive resources in improving healthcare professionals'' understanding and attitudes towards mental illness. The study recommends that, healthcare professionals should engage in ongoing training and education programs focused on mental health.
