Abstract
This study examines the influence of new media, particularly social media platforms, on the socialization process and political participation of youths in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. With the emergence of new media technologies, especially among young populations, there has been a noticeable shift in how youths interact socially and politically. The research investigates how platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter serve as spaces for youth engagement, identity formation, information exchange, and civic activism. It also evaluates the extent to which these platforms foster or hinder meaningful political participation and the spread of misinformation. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study, with a population of 400 youths and a sample size of 120 respondents selected using Yaro Yamane’s formula. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through simple percentages, frequency tables, and Chi-square statistical tools for hypothesis testing. The findings reveal that social media significantly contributes to youth socialization and enhances political awareness, though challenges such as misinformation, digital divide, and low political literacy still persist. The study concludes that while social media provides unique opportunities for youth engagement, conscious efforts must be made to improve digital literacy, promote responsible media consumption, and encourage active civic participation. It recommends that policymakers, educators, and community leaders collaborate to leverage social media for positive youth development and democratic engagement in Ohafia LGA.
