Abstract
The recent study investigated the effects of methanol extract of Datura stramonium leaves on levonorgestrel-induced toxicity in albino rats. Renal parameters (sodium and potassium) were estimated in order to investigate the toxic effect of levonorgestrel and the ameliorating effects of the extract. Twenty (20) rats grouped in to five (n4) were administered levonorgastrel and methanol leaves extract based on the experimental design. The albino rats were sacrificed after the experimental period of fourteen (14) days, and blood was collected for estimation of the renal function by ocular puncture. The administration of levonorgestrel significantly (p0.05) decreased the blood serum of sodium and potassium levels (from 254.91 ± 216.56 and 4.28 ± 0.07) group 1, to (112.04 ± 74.71 and 3.49 ± 2.34) in group 2, respectively, when rats were administered with levonorgestrel toxicity. The administration of the levonorgestrel alone side with the plant extract at 100mg/kg, resulted to a significantly (p0.05) increase in the serum blood levels of potassium (5.22 ± 0.18) and sodium (147.93 ± 2.04). Upon an increase in the concentration of the extract to 200mg/kg results in serum blood levels of potassium and sodium (2.66 ± 3.07 and 72.93 ± 04.22), respectively. A further increase in the concentration of the extract to 300mg/kg improves the level of sodium (148.16 ± 1. 50) and potassium (5.06 ± 0.27). The findings of this study can be concluded that the methanol leaves extract of Datura stramonium showed potential in correcting the effects induced by levonorgestrel intoxication. ...
