Abstract
This project work examines the effect of research and development costs on the shareholders’ value of listed oil and gas firms in Nigeria. This study examined whether research and development expenditure has any significant effect on firm profitability in the Nigerian oil and Gas industry. This research adopts the ex-post factor research design. The study draws its population from thirteen (13) quoted oil and Gas firms listed on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange as at 31st December 2023. Data were gotten from published annual financial statements of quoted oil and gas firms. A sample of seven oil and gas firms was drawn from the population using a purposive sampling technique.  The descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analysing the data. Regression analyses were used to analyse the collected data. Evidence from the regression results reveals that shareholders’ value has a significant and positive effect on firm profitability. In line with the findings, the study concludes that R&D expenditures do not significantly improve firm value. The implication of this study is that pursuing shareholder value maximization can only result in an immediate and temporary increase in profit margins, leaving the company in a very low financial state. Based on the findings and the conclusion drawn above, the study recommends that the board of directors of oil and Gas firms should increase, maintain and sustain R&D expenditures, especially in high-tech sectors like industrial sector goods....
