Abstract
This dissertation,“British firearms control policies in Benue Province 1926-1960,” studies firearms control measures introduced by the British to preserve lives during the colonial period. In looking at the control measures the researcher made use of an analytical historical method. This historical method entails the use of both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources consisted of oral interviews, archival materials and unpublished materials. In the case of oral sources, the researcher made use of an open-ended questionnaire, designed by the researcher. This questionnaire were used in interviewing custodians of history and those who worked with the colonial government and are still living. In the case of secondary sources, the researcher made use of books, articles from journals and official gazetteers. These materials were synthesized and studied to bring out relevant points. In order to have a proper grasp of the points to be made, the researcher anchored the research work on certain concepts such as firearms and ordinances. It is said that the British colonial government in Benue province introduced policies which were aimed at securing the life and property of their colonial authorities and the European traders and not the lives of the ordinary citizens. ...
