Abstract
The persistent challenge of erratic power supply in Nigeria has significantly affected the operations of educational institutions, including Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri. This study investigates the development of a biogas fuel plant as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative energy source for a steady electricity supply within the Polytechnic. Biogas, derived from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste such as food remnants, animal dung, and sewage, presents a viable solution for decentralizing energy generation and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The study adopts a descriptive survey design and collects both primary and secondary data. A sample size was determined using Yaro Yamane’s formula, and questionnaires were distributed among staff and students to gather opinions on awareness, feasibility, and support for the project. Empirical analysis and chi-square tests were employed to examine the hypotheses, while technical data from the Polytechnic’s waste output helped assess the potential capacity of the proposed biogas system. Findings reveal a high volume of organic waste generated daily within the Polytechnic, which can sufficiently power a biogas plant. Results also indicate a strong awareness and positive attitude toward biogas technology among respondents. Major challenges identified include inadequate funding, limited technical expertise, and a lack of government support. However, the environmental and economic benefits far outweigh these constraints. The study concludes that the development of a biogas plant is not only technically and economically feasible but also crucial for improving energy security and sustainability at Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Recommendations include institutional commitment, public-private partnerships, and continuous sensitization to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
