Abstract
This study, titled"Use of Electronic Scholarly Journals for Academic Tasks among Library and Information Science Undergraduate Students in Bayero University, Kano Library," investigates the utilization of electronic scholarly journals by Library and Information Science (LIS) undergraduates. It has six objectives: identifying available journal types, determining usage levels, assessing usage frequency, examining influencing factors, identifying challenges, and proposing strategies to overcome these challenges. A descriptive survey research design was employed, targeting a population of 280 LIS students (300 and 400 Levels) at Bayero University, Kano. A sample size of 162 students was selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire titled"Use of Electronic Scholarly Journals for Academic Tasks Questionnaire," featuring closed- and open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and mean scores, were used for analysis. Findings reveal moderate awareness of journals like*Library Philosophy and Practice* (74.1%) and*Nigerian Libraries* (67.9%), driven by lecturers (58.6%) and library orientation (43.2%), though awareness of international journals is lower (e.g.,*Information Development*, 52.5%). Journals are primarily used for assignments (86.4%) and general reading (71.0%), with less frequent research use (mean 2.21). Internet access (mean 3.31) and lecturer recommendations (mean 3.21) strongly influence usage, but challenges include inadequate connectivity (74.1%), limited access to recent journals (67.9%), and insufficient information literacy skills (52.5%). Proposed strategies, strongly supported by respondents, include improving connectivity (92.6%), increasing journal access (89.5%), and providing literacy training (83.3%). Recommendations include expanding journal subscriptions, enhancing library orientation, integrating journal use into the curriculum, and investing in reliable internet infrastructure to optimize resource utilization and academic outcomes....
